Graveside services for Phillip L. McLaughlin Sr., 53, of McLaughlin will be at 11 AM, Saturday, October 30, 2021, at the All Nations Veterans Cemetery. Procession will leave Kesling Funeral Home at 10 AM. Visitation will be at 5 PM Friday with a prayer service at 7 PM at Kesling Funeral Home in Mobridge. passed away Wednesday, October 20, 2021 at the Garrison Hospital in Garrison, ND.
Phillip “JR” Louis McLaughlin was born April 14, 1968, to Garnette Ruth Little Bear-McLaughlin and Phillip Henry McLaughlin. He grew up in Kenel, SD, Norman, OK, Vermillion, SD, and Roger, AR. JR graduated from Standing Rock Community High School in 1987 and crowned Homecoming King. He was active in football during high school, winning the most improved offensive back in 1985. JR loved boxing; he began his admirable amateur boxing career at 12 years old. He was winning numerous bouts, championships, and titles. He was most proud of winning the Camp Pendleton Base Boxing Championship back-to-back in 1990 & 1991. JR was preparing to vie for a spot on the US Olympic Boxing Team when Operation Desert Storm interrupted his opportunity to represent the USA at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps with Mark Free Sr. upon graduation and served five years (1987-1992). He was honorably discharged as a Corporal and awarded the following: Sea Service Deployment Ribbon w/1-star, Southwest Asia Service Medal w/2 stars, National Defense Service Medal, Rifle Expert Badge, Meritorious Mast, Good Conduct Medal, and Kuwait Liberation Medal. He attended Black Hills State College, now University, and Sitting Bull College. JR encouraged his friends and relatives to seek higher education. He worked for the Compensated Work Therapy (CWT) program with the Black Hills VA and did outreach work for the VA. He enjoyed being a DJ at KLND 89.5, and his call name was the “Rooster,” where he had a good listening audience. He was also a hardcore Oklahoma Sooner Fan. His all-time favorite player was Brian Bosworth, the “Boz.”
JR is survived by his children & (grandchildren): Lincoln (Levi), Justin (Jasity & Jastyn), Phillip Jr., Patrick, and Rita Ann McLaughlin. Siblings Roland, Jeff, and Anna McLaughlin. Special Aunt Dee McLaughlin, Huŋká Mother Dee Waroff & Daughters, Special Cousins/Brothers Keith DeHaas & Richard Fitzpatrick, Special Cousin/Sister Ampah DeHass- Danielson, Special Nephew Leander Real Bird, and Special Uncle William “Bill” DeHass. Sister-In-Law Lila Tree Top- Brought Plenty. Nieces: Dawn Brought Plenty- Laundreaux, Angie Brought Plenty, Susan Brought Plenty, Sydnee McLaughlin, and Baylee & Kaylee LaCompte. Nephews: Michael, Dustin, Kendall Brought Plenty and Jeffery “Lucas” McLaughlin.
He was preceded in death by his parents Garnette Ruth Little Bear-McLaughlin & Phillip Henry McLaughlin, Charles Mad Bear (brother), Special Aunt Rita Ann McLaughlin- DeHass, Huŋká Father Pete Waroff, all grandparents, great grandparents, great-great-grandparents, special PTSD canine buddies Pepper & Max, Special Cousins Mark Free Sr. & Brain “Chicky” Marshall, and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
