Phyllis Jean Mattheis was born on July 26, 1936 to Eltor and Vernia (Garber) Mattheis in Pierre at Grandma Garber’s place that Phyllis referred to as the “Old Hood Place.” She attended Buckeye country school and graduated from Pierre High School in 1954. On April 10, 1954, she married Melvin Leslie Fratzke at Trinity Episcopal Church.
Phyllis worked as a police meter maid early on, then went to work at Western States Wholesale until it was destroyed by fire. Phyllis owned and operated Spiffy Cleaning in the late 1970’s. Throughout the years she worked at Stanley County High School, Hughes County Courthouse, First United Methodist Church and later State of South Dakota where she retired from at the young age of 79. Throughout the years she was known to hold as many as three jobs at one time. Her declining health forced her to fully retire in October 2019.
Phyllis enjoyed crocheting, playing bingo and reading. For the past several years she was always “looking for that bucket to kick” that kept disappearing.
She is survived by her children, daughters Kathi Anderson of Fort Pierre and Lynda Fratzke of Pierre; son Robert (Marlys) of Fort Pierre; grandchildren Brandy Anderson-Boardman of Pierre; Kari of Fort Pierre, Samantha and Sondra Anderson of Pierre; Jacob and Tori Fratzke of Fort Pierre; 10 great grandchildren; sisters, Carolyn Trautman and Darlene (Steve) Ulvestad of Pierre and Sherry (Daryl) Theobald of Aberdeen; numerous nieces and nephews, and special friends LeRoy J., LeRoy Z. and Kathy Braun of Onida and Mike Boardman of Box Elder.
She was preceded in death by her husband, son Randy, her parents, sister Marilyn and son-in-law Ricky.
