BISMARCK, ND – Richard Grey Day, 75, of Bismarck, ND, passed away Friday, November 21, 2025, at Sanford Hospital, Bismarck, ND.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. CST, Saturday, December 6, 2025, at the LDS Mormon Church, Ft Yates, ND with Marva Pretends Eagle presiding. Burial will follow in the Reed Cemetery, Ft Yates, ND. A wake service will be 5:00 p.m., Friday, December 5, 2025, at the Green District Building, Ft. Yates, ND.
Richard Grey Day, was born on July 28, 1950, to Joseph Grey Day and Daisy Tail/See Walker/Iron Shield/Grey Day. He attended St. Joseph’s Boarding School where he earned his nickname, Peaches. He had the opportunity to share his horrible boarding school experience at the ND State Capital during Orange Shirt Day in 2021. He attended high school in Fort Yates and joined the Army during Vietnam.
In 1994, he married the love of his life Alice Merle Village Center/Giroux/Grey Day. He worked at the Prairie Knights Casino from the day it opened until his retirement after 19 years and 11 months. He loved to hit the powwow trail and play in all the tribal casinos. Over the years, he made many friends and relatives. He was proud of having over 30 years of sobriety and encouraged anyone who would listen.
Sungmanitu Tanka Ista Amayutan wanáǧiyata iyáye (left for the spirit world) on November 21st, 2025. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. He is survived by chinca saglogan: Lakota Sage Grey Day (Mark), Victoria Birdshead (Jonathon), Leaf Giroux (Raph), Chantelle Giroux, Vance Giroux (Julie), Sonny Giroux, Hunter Giroux, and Hunka son Mark Plante.
His grandchildren were his world and he loved them so much! Takoja: Waniyetu, Sakowin, Dakota, Kia, Sierra, Kenzlee, Brandt, Lakota Rose, Jonathan Jr, Christian, Austin, Ally, Tristan, Camryn, Neveah, Sky, Serenaly, Brayleigh, Bubbz, Hunter Jr, Lala/Oliver, Shawn, Stephen, Ellis, Tylan, Tyson, Harmony, Kyrie, and Brynnleigh. Great grandchildren: Haleigh Roze, Lexon Carter, Kaleigh, Jayla, Zayla, Kyrin, Braylin, Kodi, Anna, and Major. His Cante Skuya Letha St. John. Thankeku Catherine Grey Day na Loretta (Tom) Bad Heart Bull and Hunka sister Berlinda Bruce.
He was preceded in death by his thawicu Alice Merle Grey Day, Hunkake Joseph Grey Day Sr. and Daisy Tail/See Walker/Iron Shield. Wichathunkasitku kin: Luke Red Tomahawk na Martin Pretty Feather/Tail/See Walker, Wichakhunsitku Lola Blackhorse na Annie Mary Cross. Siblings: Gladys Grey Day Swallow, Joseph Donald Grey Day, Jr., Adelaide Grey Day Luger, Michael Grey Day, Solomon Iron Shield, Evelyn Iron Shield, Eleanor Iron Shield.
