Robert “Bob” Hagel was born on February 25, 1935, in Pierre to Carl and Marion, (Eldridge) Hagel. He grew up in Ft. Pierre riding horses at his maternal uncle’s ranch every minute he wasn’t in school. When he was six his family moved to Rapid City. Bob didn’t like it. There were no horses to ride. So, every summer he would go back to his uncles to ride. In 1952, after his mother had passed away, Bob packed his suitcase up and hitchhiked to his uncle’s in Ft. Pierre.
Bob was united in marriage to Audrey Ducheneaux in Ft. Pierre on March 31, 1956, after three years of dating. To this union two boys were born, Clayton in 1956 and Todd in 1967. They made their home in Timber Lake for several years where he worked for ranchers and for the Rural Electric Association as a lineman. In 1967 they moved to Ft. Yates, ND, where Bob had accepted a job with the Mor-Grand-Sou Electric Co-op Inc. In 1996 they moved to Mobridge where Bob has since resided and spent a lot of his time at the golf course.
Saddle bronc riding was an important part of Bob’s life. At a bucking horse sale in McLaughlin he won first place and a buckle and started his career. Bob competed in the South Dakota Rodeo Association, the North Dakota Association, the Northwest Ranch Cowboys Association, and the International Rodeo Association. He finished as the SDRA’s reserve champion in 1961 and 1962. He also competed in the IRA finals. In 1962 he finished as the reserve champion. Bob competed on his last horse in 1967.
