Robert Russell Hare passed away peacefully at the Good Samaritan Village in Sioux Falls, South Dakota on March 8, 2025. Robert was born on September 2, 1932 in McIntosh, SD to Charles and Della (Rice) Hare. He was the third of four children. Robert attended Walker Elementary School and then went on to McIntosh High School. Robert always talked about how he could not wait until 8th grade was over so he would not have to go to school anymore. His mother surprised him and told him that he would be attending high school in McIntosh as they were starting to run buses to McIntosh school from Walker. On to high school he went! During those years he played and lettered in football and was voted Homecoming King. He graduated High School in May of 1951. During a trip to Mobridge, SD he met the love of his life Shirley Ann Moser. They married on May 29, 1954 in the St. James Episcopal Church in Mobridge, SD. From their marriage four children were born.
Robert and Shirley lived on the family farm in Walker, SD while he continued to help on the farm. During that time two of his four children were born, Kathleen Ann Hare and Jaqueline Kay Hare. In 1957 they moved to Mobridge, SD and Robert went to work for Kuiper’s Construction Company, and later on as the construction business slowed down he went to work for the Phillips 66 gas station. During this time their third daughter Cynthia Lou Hare was born. Robert had the opportunity to lease his own Apco Station in Huron, SD so Robert, Shirley and the girls moved to Huron, SD. During this time their son Randall Russell Hare was born. In 1968 Robert moved his family back to Mobridge, SD and leased the Apco station while working part time for the postal service. Eventually Robert started managing Bob’s Total Gas Station full time.
During the years in Mobridge, SD Robert was an avid sports fan and attended all types of sports events, especially those that his children participated in. He enjoyed fishing & boating on the Missouri River and Oahe Reservoir. He also enjoyed camping with family and friends, especially the yearly camping trips to Foster Bay. Robert was a lifetime member of the Royal Order of the Moose Lodge as was his brothers and father. In 2009 Robert and Shirley moved to Sioux Falls, SD to be closer to family. From there he continued his love of sports and enjoyed going to all of his great grandkids sporting events and special functions. Robert had such a great sense of humor, and there was not a time that you didn’t see him smiling and laughing or telling a story that humored all.
