Royce Lee Hackl was born in Hoven, SD to Paul Hackl and Mary (Schmidt) Hackl on April 20, 1933 and died December 25, 2023 in Billings, MT following an acute medical condition and surgery in October. Royce was a devoted son, husband, father, family man, friend, and community member and leader.
Royce attended St. Anthony’s parochial school and graduated from Hoven High School in 1951. After graduation he served in the US Air Force from 1952-1956. He attended basic training at Lackland, AFB and then was stationed at Warren AFB (Cheyenne, WY), Wheelus AFB (Tripoli, Libya); and Tyndall AFB (Panama City, FL). Upon his honorable discharge from the Air Force, he returned to Hoven and worked at Frost Chevrolet in parts and bookkeeping. On July 6, 1961 he married Judith (Allen) and together raised their four children in Hoven. Royce worked at the Bank of Hoven for 23 years where he was bookkeeper, assistant cashier, cashier, and eventually vice president.
Royce’s commitment to his community through various roles and volunteer work demonstrated his love for and dedication to his hometown. Locally, he served on the Holy Infant Hospital Board from 1969- 2008, was a co-chair for the Hoven 100th Centennial Celebration and the treasurer for the 125th Centennial Celebration. He was actively involved in the Hoven Service Club where he was awarded Man of the Year in 1968. He thoroughly enjoyed being Santa’s Helper for the Fire Department which was then assumed by the Hoven Service Club (1956-2015). He was a member of the American Legion where he served as commander (1965), served as district vice commander of district 10, and was voted Legionnaire of the year in 1960.
Additionally, Royce volunteered as a fire fighter for the Hoven Fire Department (1962-85), served on the St. Anthony’s School Foundation Board of Directors as Secretary/Treasurer (1988-1994) and was the treasurer for the Hoven Community Foundation. Royce served as the treasurer for Hoven Enterprises and was involved in the creation of the Hoven Development Co-Op which assisted with the building of the Hoven Clinic and Hoven Dental Clinic. Additionally, he helped with various church projects for St. Anthony’s including the church restoration, new roof installation and the geothermal project. He was a member of St. Anthony’s Church, Swan Lake Sportsman Club, Hoven Country Club, Knights of Columbus (charter member and 4th Degree Knight) and was instrumental in the development of the Blue Valley Saddle Club. In 2002, he was nominated by the Hoven Service Club for the Jefferson Award.
Regionally, he represented Potter County on the Region Ageing Council of Northeastern South Dakota, assisted with Potter County Achievement Days, and served on the TV District for Potter County. He also served on the Northeast Mental Health finance board and Northeast Council of Governments.
He is survived by three children: Kathryn Manfull (Kirk Baker), Billings, MT; Suzette Nynas (Marc), Billings, MT and Thomas Hackl, Sioux Falls. He is also survived by Arlo Manfull and 8 grandchildren (Kyrstyn Manfull, Landyn (Danica) Manfull and Riley Manfull (Shelby Wrage), Scott Hackl, Jake Hackl and Summer (Dean) Melluish and Abbegael Nynas and Matthew Nynas along with 6 great grandchildren (Jayden and Mercy Hackl, Harper and Jimmy Hackl, Teddy Melluish and soon to be born Royce Manfull).
He is preceded in death by his parents Paul (1981) and Mary (2001) Hackl; wife Judith Hackl (1995); and son James Hackl (2002).
Wake Services are scheduled for 7:00 PM Monday at the Church led by Father Brian P. Simon. Visitation begins at 6:00 PM.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 AM, Tuesday, January 2, 2024 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Hoven, with Father J. Joseph Holzhauser, Celebrant. Pastor Matt Pribyl will speak following Communion. Interment, with military graveside rites by the John J. Peters American Legion Post No. 159, Hoven, SD, follows at the Church Cemetery. Organist will be Alice Simon and St. Anthony’s Church Choir will sing “Be Not Afraid”, “On Eagle’s Wings”, “Here I Am, Lord”, “Blest Are They”, “Song of Farewell”, “America the Beautiful”, and “God Bless America”; Soloist Bill Keller will sing “Our Father”; Placing the pall will be Royce’s children, Kathryn, Suzette, and Thomas; Offertory gift bearers will be his grandchildren, Kyrsytn, Landyn and Riley Manfull and Abbegael and Matthew Nynas; Eucharistic Minister will be Suzi Vail; Lector will be Linda Feldmeier; and Mass servers will Ivan Stuwe and Konrad Stuwe.
Casketbearers will be Jerry Brickner, Ernie Hoven, Mark Weber, and Larry Miles of Hoven; Francis Karst of Sioux Falls; and Mike Duenwald of Altamont.
