PIERRE, SD – Samuel “Sam” Bowles,89, of Pierre passed away on Friday, April 5th at Avantara in Pierre. A memorial service will be held at 10:00am on Friday, March 12th at Isburg Funeral Chapel in Pierre with burial to follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Blunt. For those unable to attend the service it will be live streamed in the link below.
A true cowboy at heart Sam was born on March 3, 1935, in Pierre to Lloyd and Alice (Wester) Bowles and was raised in the wide-open spaces of Harrold, South Dakota, where he attended country school. He quickly developed a passion for the ranching lifestyle and wide-open spaces.
Sam married Pat (Burley) on July 15th, 1961 in Pierre, they built their home and ranched in Sully and Hughes counties where they raised their family. Sam was a rancher and horse trainer and his reputation as a true cowboy was not just a title but a way of life.
He enjoyed the times spent riding horses across the plains, overseeing his livestock. An avid outdoorsman, Sam also enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Sam is survived by his daughters, Maria Kraft of Onida, Linda Bowles of Ft. Pierre, Susan Bowles of Pierre, and Shawn Bowles of Ft. Pierre, two brothers Tom and Louis “LeRoy” Spaid, one sister Erma McGee, ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded by his parents, his sons Sammy and Clovis, brother Steve, and Catherine Sulzle.
