After completing his 8th grade education at Redstone Country School, Seth worked alongside his father on the farm until he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1952.
During the Korean War, while on a 72-hour leave, Seth married the love of his life, Joyce Tollefson, in Gardena, California. Following an honorable discharge in 1954, he returned home to Carthage, where he and Joyce built a life together, raising their four children: Randy, Monica, Robert, and Kurt.
Seth was deeply committed to his faith and community, serving at the Lutheran Church, as a 4-H leader, and on the Miner County Extension Boards.
