Sharon Kay Miller was born November 26, 1941, in Gettysburg to Raymond C. and Mildred (McGough) Miller. She was the second child and the first-born daughter. Sharon attended school at Gettysburg, graduating with the class of 1959.
On June 7, 1959, Sharon married Harlen D. Shaw. They had two sons, Richard Allen in June 1962, and David Douglas in January 1976.

In the late 1960’s and early 1970’s, Sharon was a member of the Range Riders, a group of people who loved to ride horses together. She also served on the Gettysburg School Board and Gettysburg City Council.
