GETTYSBURG, SD – Sharon K. Shaw, 82, of Gettysburg, passed away Friday, March 29, 2024, at the Eastern Star Home, Redfield.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Thursday, April 11, 2024, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Gettysburg, with Pastor
David Otten presiding. A prayer service will be 6:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 10, 2024, at the church with visitation one-
hour prior. To honor Sharon, please wear your favorite nail polish or jewelry to her services.
Sharon Kay Miller was born November 26, 1941, in Gettysburg to Raymond C. and Mildred (McGough) Miller. She was
the second child and the first-born daughter. Sharon attended school at Gettysburg, graduating with the class of 1959.
On June 7, 1959, Sharon married Harlen D. Shaw. They had two sons, Richard Allen in June 1962, and David Douglas in
January 1976.
Sharon became a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church (Missouri Synod) prior to her marriage and was a faithful
member until her death. She was involved in the choir, altar guild, Friendship Circle, and Dial a Devotion. In the late
1960’s and early 1970’s, Sharon was a member of the Range Riders, a group of people who loved to ride horses together.
She also served on the Gettysburg School Board and Gettysburg City Council. She was an active member and supporter of
the American Legion Auxiliary, serving as president for two terms, and she was selected as Legionette of the year on the
local level and District 10 Legionette of the year in 2001. Sharon assisted Harlen in all the weighing and record keeping
involved in putting on the Whitlock Bay Walleye Tournament for many years.
Sharon believed in family, church, school, and community and did the best she could in supporting the goals and
objectives of all.
Throughout the years, Sharon worked in the insurance business as well as the Potter County deputy treasurer until her
retirement in 2016.
She loved her many pets, dogs, and cats. All the Coppers and Duchess, cats: Simba, Pooh, Foots, Smokey, and Jack who
has been rehomed to her good friend, Mary Lynn Collins. She also had two horses, Chocolate and Cocoa.
Sharon thoroughly enjoyed walking. She walked every day with her dogs and her close friends, Donna and Janet. She
enjoyed going out to the farm with Harlen whether it was winter or summer. Harlen would drop her and Copper off about
a mile from the farm so she could get her walk in.
Sharon had many interests. In her free time, she enjoyed reading and watching old western movies. She could hardly wait
for spring to come as she loved planting and caring for her flower gardens.
They moved to the Eastern Star Home, Redfield, in November of 2022. Harlen and Sharon had many good friends at the
assisted living facility, where Sharon enjoyed walking with her neighbors. While living in Redfield they enjoyed going to
Leo’s Good Food for dinner. The family would like to thank the Eastern Star Home for their wonderful care of Sharon.
The most important person in her life was her husband, Harlen, who was always there for her. She was privileged to have
two wonderful sons: Rick (Deb) of Redfield and David (Shawna) of West Fargo, ND; her special grandchildren: Samantha
(Eric Butz) Shaw of Gettysburg, Spencer (Dylan) Shaw of Sioux Falls, and Colston Shaw of West Fargo, ND; step-
grandchildren: Danielle (Jamison) Carpenter, Ohio, Stephanie (Travis) Rude, Aberdeen, Krystle Dickhaut (Brady
Williams), Sioux Falls, and Drew (Haley) Dickhaut, Redfield; six step great grandchildren as well as one on the way;
brothers: Dr. R. Marshal (Mable), Jerry (Robin), and Phil (Michele) Miller, all of Huntsville, TX, and Doug (Sherri)
Miller, Pierre; sister-in-law, Marge Miller, Ft. Pierre and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was welcomed home by her parents; brother, Johnny Miller; sister, Phyllis Miller; and sister-in-law, Kathy Miller.
