Sheyenne “Joe” Menard, Chante Tinza (Strong Heart) was born to Marie Menard and Paul John Iron Cloud Sr. on November 11, 1986, in Rapid City, South Dakota. In the summer of 1983, his family moved to Fort Washakie, Wyoming with his dad Verlin Rooks, who helped raise him. For Joe, the term “step-dad” was never in his vocabulary, as Verlin taught him how to hunt, fish, and those infamous basketball moves. While attending Fort Washakie Elementary and Junior High School, he discovered his love for basketball.
Joe’s fondest memory was learning how to spin a basketball on his finger. Both he and his dad would spend hours practicing together to reach that goal.
After leaving Wyoming, Joe moved to South Dakota to live with his “old gramma” Marcella Vivian DuBray-Iron Cloud. This is where he lived and went to school. During his time in South Dakota, he started his traditional and ceremonial path and became a Sundancer at his grandparent’s Steve DuBray’s place.
At the age of 15, Joe met his wife, Darcy. They moved to Minnesota, where they got married and started their family. Joe and Darcy became foster parents to many children in the Prairie Island community.
Joe and Darcy had three children together: Terrence John “Son”, Tracy, and Takoda. He was also an Até to Wakinyan, Darlyn, and Zintkala.
While living near the Prairie Island community, Joe taught many relatives the ceremonial way of life. He traveled all over the country, helping others and making new relatives.
Joe worked in the construction field for 17 years, eventually moving up to the foreman position and working all over the Midwest.
He enjoyed singing, traveling, and sun dancing. Above all, he loved his wife and children very much. Joe was also an avid Steelers fan and passed this passion on to his children.
Joe is survived by his wife, Darcy Menard of Minnesota; their children: Terrence John, Tracy Mae, and Tahkoda; his mother, Maria Menard (Verlin Rooks) of Wyoming; his father, Paul John Iron Cloud of Colorado; and Até Terry and Ina Marcy Fiddler of Minnesota. He is also survived by his many sisters and brothers on both sides of his family.
He was preceded in death by his grandmother Marcella DuBray-Iron Cloud; grandparents Clarence Menard Jr., Muriel Bowker-Menard, Martina LaDeoux, Lorraine Bowker-Downing, Tyrone Bowker, and Jerome Head; uncle Christopher Menard; brothers Yamni Iron Cloud; Kyle Bacon, and Mathew Thunder Hawk. His sister Cheyenne Fiddler. Hunka Dad, Art Owen.
