Shirley Mae Hoff, 86, Eureka, SD, died Friday, February 18, 2022 at the Avera Eureka Healthcare Center.
Shirley Mae Funk, daughter of Magdalena (Schock) and Johannes “John” Funk, was born January 21, 1936 at Eureka. She first lived on her parent’s farm NE of Eureka near the state line. While living there she stayed with her grandmother in Eureka and attended school in Eureka. In 1945, the family moved to the farm they purchased 3 miles east and 2 miles S of Eureka. Shirley then attended rural school in Stickel TWSHP. She attended high school in Eureka, graduating with the Class of 1954. Shirley went on to Northern State Teacher’s College in Aberdeen, SD where she earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education. She married Elroy Hoff at Zion American Lutheran Church in Eureka on August 19, 1956. They settled on their farm 4 miles E and ½ mile S of Eureka. Shirley’s teaching career spanned 20 years in rural schools and 24 years at Eureka Grade School. She retired in 1999.In 1997, she and Elroy moved into Eureka. Shirley belonged to Zion American Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday school. She was also the Lutheran Brotherhood communicator from March 2000-December 2002. Her hobbies included crafts, sewing for church, reading, gardening, and taking care of flower beds.
Shirley is survived by one son—Kevin Hoff of Eureka and one sister—LaRue (Eugene) Stokes of Sioux City, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Elroy, on December 4, 2011; her father, Johannes, on March 29, 1993; her mother, Magdalena, on March 8, 2007; one brother (Allen Funk); one sister (Olivia Bendewald); daughter-in-law (Trena Hoff); and one granddaughter.
Funeral services will be 1:00 PM, Friday, February 25, 2022 at Zion American Lutheran Church, Eureka, led by Pastor Ryan Gage. Interment follows at the Church Cemetery. Organist will be Kim Gruebele and the congregation will sing “Children of the Heavenly Father” and “What A Friend we have in Jesus”. Dennis and Margie Walker will sing a medley composed of “Precious Lord, Take My Hand” and “Softly and Tenderly, Jesus is calling”. Ushers will be Donald and Kathy Gab.
Visitation commences 12 noon Friday at the church.
Honorary bearers will be Shirley’s brother-in-law, Eugene; Dale Bendewald of Sioux Falls, SD; Darrick Funk, Doug Wanttie, Zachary Wanttie, and Isaac Wanttie of Aberdeen; and Glenn Beutler of Eureka.
Casketbearers will be Greg Hoff, Jeremy Hoff, James Pfeifle, Greg Merkel, and Clyde Ottenbacher of Eureka; and Neal Stokes of Sioux City.
Services are in care of Lien-Straub Funeral Chapel, Eureka.
