FT. PIERRE, SD – Shorty Deal, 84, of Fort Pierre, SD, died on Tuesday, April 23, 2024 at Avera McKennan in Sioux Falls. A funeral service will be held at 11:00am on Monday, April 29th at the Pat Duffy Community Youth and Involved Center with a visitation one hour prior to the services, burial will take place at Scotty Philip Cemetery in Ft. Pierre.
Duane “Shorty” Deal was born to Bud Deal & Genevieve (Stadler) Deal at Kimball, South Dakota, on November 1, 1939. Shorty grew up ranching with his family in different areas of South Dakota. Cowboying was a love he carried with him his entire life. While Shorty dabbled in feed sales for a short time, driving truck was his life-long profession. He logged many miles throughout the US and Canada. He loved a clean truck and a full lunch box!
Over the years he worked for the Carlisle Ranch on Bad River, Earl Sonnenschein, Diamond A Cattle Company, Bob O’Day, Red Creek Farms, Morton Feed, a short stint driving tour bus for Williams & Ree, Hoffman Trucking, Morris, Inc., Van Diest Supply & CRST Trucking. Always looking to keep busy, he would fill in here and there for local farms driving grain truck.
Shorty’s life was filled with work. Work work, his work, busy work and all of it joyful work to him. He took pride in his work. It has been said he doesn’t do it fast, but it is done right. He looked forward to branding season, going to rodeos and sporting events for his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Shorty is survived by his wife Tammy Deal, his sons, Scott (Toni) Deal, Sean (Kellie) Deal, Sanford (Ronda) Deal, Charlo Deal, his daughters, Kayla (Leander) Austin and Korina (Brant) Billings, his step-son Dayton (Jodi) Bothwell and their children, 23 Grandchildren & 24 Great-Grandchildren. His brothers, Luke (Janice) Deal, Dick Deal, sisters Sharon (Dave) Storrs, MaryAnn Fischer, sister-in-law Verna Deal and numerous nieces & nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Raymond Deal, sister-in-law Faye Deal, brother-in-law Jimmy Fischer and daughter-in-law Darci Deal, granddaughter Matea Austin, and niece Connie Fischer.
