Sidney Paul Eagleshield Jr, “Chatka Pheta, Left hand fire”, 76, of McLaughlin, SD, passed away on Wednesday, January 4, 2023 at Sanford Medical Center of Bismarck ND.
Funeral services for Sidney P. Eagleshield Jr. will be at 11:00am CST Saturday January 14, 2023 at the American Legion Post 239 building in Little Eagle, SD. Burial will be at the Has Horns/Eagleshield Family Cemetery. A prayer service will be at 7:00 pm CST Friday January 13, 2023 at the American Legion Post 239 building.
Sidney was born on October 29, 1946 in Little Eagle, SD to Sidney & Minnie (Has Horns) Eagleshield Sr. He grew up in Little Eagle, SD. He graduated from 8th grade from Little Eagle Day School, then went to St. Elizabeth Mission School in Wakpala, SD. He played basketball and ran cross country. He then received his GED and enlisted in the U.S. Army on August 25, 1967. He then was deployed to the Republic of Vietnam with his unit Company A, 15th Battalion – 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile) from November 1967 to November 1968. He was decorated with the National Defense Service Medal, Republic of Vietname Campaign Medal with Device, two oversea service bars with medal, sharp shooter qualification badge with rifle bar, the Army Commendation medal, and Vietnam Service medal with four bronze service stars. After the service, he returned home to Little Eagle to help his parents run their cattle at the family homestead. He then met his beloved wife, Beverly A. Hollow, and were married for 49 years. He attended several colleges such as the University of Nebraska (Lincoln NE), Northern State University (Aberdeen SD), North Dakota State College of Science (Wahpeton ND), S.I.P.I. (Albuquerque NM). He worked many numerous jobs in his life, but he mostly enjoyed working for Standing Rock Sioux Tribe in the Land Management Department as a survey technician and mapping specialist, and had recently retired with 20 years of service to the people of Standing Rock. He also worked for the Indian Health Service (Office of Environmental Health and Engineering) as an Auto CAD technician and assisted in surveys in Mobridge, SD. In his spare time, he enjoyed going to Indian Relay Races, bowling (he bowled a perfect game of 300 in his lifetime), watched his Nebraska Cornhusker and L.A. Rams, but most of all he enjoyed helping with the Bigfoot Ride. He was a lifetime member of American Legion Post 239. At one time, the American Legion Post 239 lost their Charter, so he and Adrian Kills Crow went to Chamberlain, SD to represent the Legion and they got it back. He was very proud of his sobriety and he has been sober for 45 years.
Family & Friends were always a priority. Sidney was survived by his late wife of 49 years, four children: Craig (Claudene) Eagleshield of Cannon Ball, ND, Adrianne (Douglas) Eagleshield of McLaughlin, SD, Yendis (randy) Rocha of McLaughlin, SD, Sidney Eagleshield III of McLaughlin, SD, and adopted children: Pete Ducheneaux of Mobridge, SD, Kenneth Spotted Horse of McLaughlin, SD, Justin Yellow Fat of Fort Yates, ND, and Jonathan Edwards of McLaughlin, SD; siblings: Fern Has Horns of Little Eagle, SD, Mariann (LeRoy) White of Little Eagle, SD, Clarice Miner (only living Aunt & his favorite) of Eagle Butte, SD, John Eagleshield, Sr. of Fort Yates, ND, Howard Eagleshield of McLaughlin, SD, Fritz Eagleshield, Jr of McLaughlin, SD, Joe Miner of Eagle Butte, SD, Marlin Miner of Eagle Butte, SD, Geraldine Agard of McLaughlin, SD, Mable Medicine Crow of McLaughlin, SD, Etta Brave Crow of McLaughlin, SD, and Gale Brave Crow of McLaughlin, SD. Grandchildren: Natosha Hiipakka of Sioux Falls, SD, Randal Jr., Ricky (Telicia Blackbird) and Chante Eagleshield of Fort Yates, ND; Louise Eagleshield of McLaughlin, SD; Taylor, Jordan, Treyvor and Jayden Schwalk of McLaughlin, SD; Katelyn and Lyle III Lumbar of McLaughlin, SD; Great Grandchildren: Leo T. Morgan of Sioux Falls, SD; Ransom Allen Eagleshield of Fort Yates, ND; Lyla Red Tomahawk of McLaughlin, SD; and Hazel Joy Schwalk of McLaughlin, SD. Many special relatives too numerous to list.
Sidney is proceeded in death by his beloved wife, Beverly A. Eagleshield and his sons, Randal A. Eagleshield, Sr and Sam Martin, Parents Sidney Sr. and Minnie Eagleshield, Maternal Grandparents Owen & Lizzie Has Horns and John and Louise (Takes the Hat) Make Life-Eagleshield, Fritz Wallace Eagleshield, Sr and Ernest Eagleshield.
