PIERRE, SD – Steven Ulvestad,76, of Pierre passed away on Saturday, December 30, 2023. A graveside service will be held on Monday, January 8th at 2:30pm(mst) at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, SD.
Steven was Born on August 22, 1947, near Sinai, South Dakota to Alfred and Valberg (Johnson) Ulvestad. He lost his mother at young age his father remarried Edna Manning, who became a loving stepmother to Steven.
Steven spent his childhood days learning at Pinegrove country school, followed by his middle school years at Sinai, and eventually graduated from Arlington High School in 1965.
He joined the US Army, serving his country with honor. Following his honorable discharge on October 5, 1972, Steven returned to South Dakota and began a new chapter in Mobridge, where he was employed by Tractor Supply Co. His work ethic and reliability led to a transfer to the Huron TSC branch, before eventually finding his long-term career with the South Dakota Department of Transportation in 1981.
In 1971, he married Judy Langbehn, with whom he shared the joy of welcoming two children: Reed in 1975 and Amy in 1980. Although their marriage ended in 1995, Steven found love again and remarried Darlene Mattheis, who remained by his side.
Colleagues from the Department of Transportation will remember him as a dedicated worker who brought both skill and kindness to his job every day.
In his leisure, Steven enjoyed camping and fishing.
He is survived by his wife Darlene of Pierre, his children Reed (Yvon) Ulvestad of Austin TX and Amy (Josh) Gaberiel of Pierre, four grandchildren Ronin, Kaed, William, Robbie and Hailey. His siblings Larry (Pam) Ulvestad of Ft. Collins CO, Al Manning of Yuma AZ, Leslie “Bud” (Carla) Manning of Larchwood IA, and Joan (Gordy) Williams. He is also survived by his step-children Bobbie, Jeffery, Theresa, step-grandchildren, Dakota, Lorna, Cody, Brian, Tate, Courtney, Shawn and Craig they all held special places in his heart.
Steven is preceded in death by his mother, father and his step-mother.
