Thomas Anthony Baker Sr. was born George Dallas Lefthand on July 29th, 1945 to Esther Lefthand (Silk) in Kenel, SD. He was raised in rural Kenel by his grandparents, George and Mary Jane (Poitra) Lefthand along with his younger aunts and uncles. He attended elementary school at St. Joseph Indian School in Chamberlain SD and then went on to Fort Yates Public School and stayed in the dorms there. At 16 years old he rode a buffalo at the Fort Yates rodeo and won first place which started his rodeo career. His love for the rodeo circuit lasted for many decades and gained him many lifelong friends and family. Tommy attended college in Grand Forks for art, this gave him a good foundation for all the crafts he did in his lifetime. He excelled at being a seamster, painter, drawer, and any other type of crafts he could get his hands on. Tom specialized in Native artwork and was well known for his beadwork which he won many awards for. Throughout his life he worked in construction, electrical and carpentry among many other hands-on work. Tommy was a jack-of-all-trades but was best known for his mechanic abilities and ranch hand work. He was an expert horseman and the best cowboy around. Tom was always the life of the party and a natural entertainer. He enjoyed joking, making people laugh along with singing and playing the guitar. He will be missed by his many children, family members and friends that he had in his life.
