Thomas J. Mitzel was born in Mobridge, SD on June 16th, 1962 to Karl and Virginia (Lang) Mitzel. He was raised in Herreid, SD with his three brothers Bruce, Alan, and Terry. After graduating high school in 1980, Tom attended NSU where he majored in Business Administration with an emphasis in Accounting. He then began his 36-year career with the Campbell County Bank and Insurance Agency in 1984. Tom knew every in-and-out of his profession. If he did not know the answer to a question, he would make sure to find out and get back to you.
Tom married his soulmate, Mary Voller, on April 27th, 1991. Together, they had two daughters, Kelsey and Kayla. There is no doubt that he loved his three ladies more than anything in life. Family came first for Tom, and he was sure to spend valuable time with them, whether at home or on vacations. His pride for his daughters was ever apparent and considered by him as his greatest contributions. Their success was his success; their happiness was his happiness.
Tom had the best belly laugh, and a smile that lit up a room. An intellect, you could be sure that he had researched any given topic and was willing to share his knowledge. A perfectionist, a master of the label maker, a house like a museum, and cars cleaner than showroom new. Tom owns what his brother considers every tool ever made, but never used. His business organization skills spill into his highly organized nature with most everything. Tom was always kind, always upbeat, even when things were difficult in the end.
A man of routine, he could be found grilling on his patio each evening, enjoying a beer and time with his Mary. Tom enjoyed putzing in his yard, washing vehicles and driving his corvette to the Black Hills. Tom also enjoyed vacationing in Clearwater Beach, FL. His family jokes that he spent his spare time being the local tour guide and interviewing the Uber drivers.
Tom proudly served as a member of the Linton Hospital Board of Directors since 2017, and the chairman of the St. Michaels Cemetery Foundation since 2018. He previously served as a member of the Herreid Volunteer Fire Department, Herreid Ambulance Crew, and the St. Michael’s Parish Council.
After a short battle with pancreatic cancer and liver disease, Tom passed away on February 22nd, 2021 at the Linton Medical Center. His life is reflected in the family he loved and cherished. His legacy is a lesson in strength and generosity.
Tom is survived by his wife, Mary of Herreid; daughters Kelsey of Sartell, MN, and Kayla of Lombard, IL; mother Virginia of Herreid, SD; brothers Bruce of Herreid, Alan (Cindy) of Colleyville, TX, and Terry (Lori) of Hillsboro, ND.
He was preceded in death by his father Karl; mother-in-law Rose Voller; father-in-law Arthur Voller; grandparents Julius and Rose Lang, and Edward and Martha Mitzel.
The family is incredibly thankful for the care Tom received. In leu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made in Tom’s honor to the Linton Medical Center or the Campbell County Ambulance.
