Memorial service for Verlene Aman, 86, of Mobridge will be held at 10:30 AM, Wednesday, August 2, 2023, at the First Baptist Church in Mobridge. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home. Verlene passed away Sunday, July 23, 2023, at Jenkins Living Center in Watertown.
Born October 13, 1936, in Herreid, SD, Verlene Aman was the oldest child of Otto and Lydia (Vilhauer) Berreth. Her birth certificate carries the name “Verlaine” but it fell by the wayside in childhood and the alternate spelling/pronunciation took over. Her early years were spent in the Herreid area where she attended school.
On October 28, 1955, she married Ted Aman at the First Baptist Church in Mobridge, SD and the couple made a home in Mobridge until a brief move (or extended visit) to Lodi, California in 1960. Afterward, Verlene had no problem relating her dislike of the experience and the west coast in general.
With the exception of a few years in Clark, SD, Mobridge remained her home until 2020 when she moved to Watertown, SD to be closer to family.
Verlene performed a number of different jobs over the years, but she spent many years working in the photo lab at Leonards’ Studio. During this time, she also did sewing for many people and was normally quite busy during prom season. Her last job was working in the kitchen of the Mobridge Regional Hospital where she retired after over 30 years. Reading was one of her favorite pastimes and she always said she wanted to live long enough to read all the books she had and, as a form of insurance she would always buy more. She liked to embroider and crocheting was a favorite hobby, particularly the intricate doll dresses she made. Travel was also something she loved, though she never did as much as she hoped.
Verlene is survived by three children, Lowell (Debra) Aman of Watertown, Owen Aman of Big Horn, Wyoming and Nova Iszler of River Falls, Wisconsin; eight grandchildren, Derek Aman of New Rochelle, NY, Pierce Aman and Sean Aman of Sioux Falls, SD, Brandy Pownell of Bettendorf, IA, Chris Aman and Lindsay Aman of Sheridan, Wyoming and Morgan Iszler of Burnsville, MN and Samantha Lynum, of Twentynine Palms, California as well as 7 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Ted and her sister, Sharon Fiddler.
