Verna Jean (Stoecker) Ehnes was born July 1, 1934 to Edward and Hanna Stoecker. She grew up on their family farm and went to school in Mahto, SD. Verna worked at various jobs in McLaughlin, SD including working as a nurse at the hospital. Then on July 3, 1954, she married the love of her life, John Ehnes. They lived in McLaughlin a short time and lived out on the farm for a while, then lived at other places in South Dakota while John worked for a road construction company. John and Verna Jean also made their home in Killdeer, ND while he worked for an electric company. Then they moved back to McLaughlin and got into the farming business. In all this time they raised three children: Marlo, Mark and Marty. Verna and John together created a fun, caring home filled with love for their family, along with well-disciplined and good values. Verna was a parishioner of both St. Bernard in McLaughlin and St. Joseph in Mobridge. She was John’s hired man while their kids were in school. Amongst other things, she drove tractor and a grain truck. One time she drove a truck back from the Mahto grain elevator and it overheated and caught fire. Verna was not hurt and the truck was saved. She filled the drills with grain while John was sitting in the tractor with one leg in a cast. Verna loved to cook “oh so good” meals during holidays. God blessed her children with the greatest mother and teacher that they could’ve ever had. She has helped so many people in so many ways, and it all came from her loving heart. John and Verna Jean farmed together until retirement in the late 1980’s. They lived in McLaughlin until 2004 when they moved to Mobridge, SD. Verna lost John later that year. Then on May 1, 2013 she moved into the WCCC nursing home in Selby, SD. “This is my home”, Verna said to me. She had gotten the best care in the world there. The staff and nurses are amazing. Thank you WCCC for taking care of our sweet, loving mother. God picked this place for Verna, after her youngest son went to Church and got down on his knees asking God to pick a nice sounding place for his mother to live, the best mother in the whole wide world. Thank you and God bless you, Mom and Dad. Thank you God for bringing John and Verna Jean Ehnes together and now enjoying their heavenly home with Jesus. From your family with love, Marlo, Mark and Marty.
