William Bevin Roseland, 98, of Seneca, passed away Friday, January 13, 2023, at Faulkton Area Medical Center.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Thursday, January 19, 2023, at the United Church of Faulkton, Faulkton, with Pastor Shawn Stoll presiding. Burial will follow in the Oakland Cemetery, Seneca. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.
William Bevin Roseland was born November 14, 1924, at the family farm in Faulk County, South Dakota to William and Nora (Hanson) Roseland. He grew up on the farm. He and his siblings attended East Ellisville School, a school his father had also attended. His mother passed away when he was five and the older kids helped care for the younger kids. He had two sisters, and four brothers. Bevin’s dad eventually remarried and to this union four more siblings were born.
Bevin married Vivian Starks on November 14, 1947, in Brookings, South Dakota. They were together for 71 years until her passing in 2019. They farmed and ranched with his brother and father until 1961 when he and Vivian bought their current farm north of Seneca. Bevin and Vivian’s youngest son, Loren, began farming and ranching along with his parents beginning in 1980.
He always loved early morning on the farm and said the best time of day was watching the sunrise. He slowed down a bit in recent years but continued mowing hay until age 94, when he reluctantly agreed that the time had come to take it a little easier. He continued riding along checking cattle and fences. Retirement was never anything he was interested in, staying actively involved almost to the end of his life.
Ranching kept Bevin close to home, but he still found time to attend numerous events for his grandchildren, and later his great grandchildren. He especially enjoyed family gatherings when he could discuss school and activities with grandkids. He was blessed with a remarkable memory, always remembering birthdays and anniversaries. He will be remembered for the stories he shared from past days.
He is survived by his three sons, Nick (Linda) of Pierre, Kevin (Peggy) of Redfield, and Loren and special friend Lisa of Seneca; one brother, Boyd; sisters-in-law, Marie Starks and Sharon Roseland; grandchildren: Nicole, Cara, Erik, Greg, Sarah, Michelle, Angela and Chris; 19 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death are his wife, Vivian; parents; stepmother, Eileen; daughter-in-law, Alma; grandson-in-law, Troy; great granddaughter, Alexys; brothers: Bud, Rex, Gene, Ronald, Gary, and Richard; sisters: Gayle, Blodwyn, Corrine, and infant sister, Berniece; seven sisters-in-law; and seven brothers-in-law.
He will be forever loved and dearly missed by his family.
Memorials in Bevin’s honor may be sent to the Oakland Cemetery, c/o Rolland Potter, 201 Elm St., Seneca, SD 57473.
