William “Charley” Johnson, 86, Hosmer, SD, died Sunday, April 17, 2022 at Avera McKennan Hospital, Sioux Falls, SD.
William Charles Johnson, son of Albertina (Cheskey) and Alfine Johnson, was born March 15, 1936 near Bangor, SD. He was brought up near Selby, SD, attended rural school, and eventually earned his G.E.D. Charley, as he was best known, married Rebecca “Becky” Jasper at Pipestone, MN on August 22, 1962. Early in his life, Charley was engaged in road construction, working on the Platte-Winner bridge and the interstate highway. In 1966, Charley and Becky moved to Timber Lake, SD where Charley started his truck driving career. His last move was to Hosmer in 1972. He drove truck for Harry Kirschenmann and Aman Cattle Company. He retired in the late 1990’s. Charley was a faithful member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Hosmer. In retirement, he enjoyed woodworking projects and made many treasure chests.
Charley is survived by Becky, his wife of 59 years; his son, William “Bill” (Dr. Holly) Johnson of Hosmer; four daughters—Kimberly (Brian) Doherty of Ft. Pierre, SD; Lesia Thomas of Claremont, SD, Melissa (Eric) Miller of Mina, SD, and Nicole (Travis Napton) Johnson of Volga, SD; his sister, Sue Hargan, of Sioux Falls; 13 grandchildren; and 1 great grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his father, Alfine, on November 30, 1957; his mother, Albertina, on December 16, 1972; two brothers (one in infancy) and four sisters.
The Church service will be livestreamed at the Lien Family Funeral Care Facebook page and be available Sunday night at this site Sunday night.
Services will be 2:00 PM, Friday, April 22, 2022 at St. John’ Lutheran Church, Hosmer, led by Pastor David Peterson. Burial follows at Bethany Cemetery, Hosmer. Organist will be Wes Schaible and the congregation will sin “Amazing Grace”, “How Great Thou Art”, “The Old Rugged Cross”, and “On Eagle’s Wings”. Ushers will be David Eisenbeisz and Delbert Gienger.
Urn bearer will be Charley’s firstborn grandchild, Merissa Schlepp of Sioux Falls. All of his grandchildren will act as honorary bearers.
There will be a prayer service 7:00 PM Thursday at Lien Funeral Home, Bowdle.
