Zouie M. Lone Eagle, 91, of Bridger, returned to her heavenly home on Saturday, February 5, 2022, at Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital, Philip, after a long and beautiful life. Her devotion to her family and her firm belief in God supported her throughout many decades of change and ultimately gave her peace.
Funeral services will be 12:00 p.m. MST, Monday, February 14, 2022, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Bridger. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Zouie was born to the late Harry and Fannie (Hunts Horse) Bear Eagle, a rancher and a homemaker respectively, in Bridger, South Dakota, on July 9, 1930. She was immersed in the Catholic community that would be her lifelong support from an early age. She was an acolyte for her father as an adolescent and she broke horses, raised cattle, and rode throughout her expansive lands. Zouie was a mentor to many in the community. She was a seamstress making star quilts, clothes, also crocheted special handmade items such as gifts for friends and relatives.
Zouie was blessed with a loving family. She married her best friend Harlan W. Lone Eagle, who served honorably in United States Army in support of the Korean War.
She raised two strong, independent children with patience, discipline, and humility. Zouie also raised her granddaughters Carrie and Ginger Lone Eagle from birth. She also supported the military career of her oldest granddaughter by supporting and caring for her great grandson Joseph R. Hunts Horse-May Jr. (Tha Wiphe Ohitika), and Audrey B. Hunts Horse through multiple deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. She taught them to read and write, and she told them stories about the old ways of the Lakota.
Zouie was an avid horsewoman, a teacher, patient and giving, she served as a mid-wife, delivering many children throughout the community.
From the very beginning, she dedicated her life to God and encouraged those around her to remain faithful to the gospel despite difficult times.
Zouie was on this earth for almost 100 years, she worked hard, loved her family fiercely and lived to see this world change in ways that many of us will never understand. She always had a positive outlook and saw the beauty and joy in simple things. She was loved dearly by her only daughter who cared for her in her home as was her wish.
Zouie is survived by daughter Sibyl; granddaughter Christina; great grandchildren: Audrey, Joseph Jr., Maspegni Hunts Horse; grandchildren: Ginger, Patrick, Alsasha, Eliza Lone Eagle; hunka eastern son Tom Wyhermuller; hunka sister Helen Smith; adopted niece/daughter Elmira Blue Legs; nieces: Bonnie, Celinda, and Benita; nephews: Bennett, Brent, and Brice; and numerous grandchildren.
There in the journey home to the star nation Mini Wacha Win will be welcomed by her loving parents Harry and Fannie Bear Eagle; sister Celeste; brothers, Sprague, and Noah Bear Eagle; her loving son Al Neal; granddaughter Carrie; especially her only grandson, Bronko Hunts Horse; other special grandchildren: Charla, Jessica and Wyatt; and her favorite grandmother Tasina Ska Win Bear Eagle.
