When many people think of wildfires in South Dakota, they think of the Black Hills or rural parts of the state.
But, Pierre Volunteer Fire Department chief Ian Paul says there are grass fires in Pierre every year.

Pierre Rural Volunteer Fire Department chief Jason Roggo says whether or not open burning is allowed in rural areas of Hughes County is determined by the Grassland Fire Danger rating.
To call in a controlled burn in Hughes County, call Central South Dakota Communications Dispatch at 605-773-7410.
