The annual South Dakota Law Enforcement Memorial Service was held in Pierre Wednesday morning (May 8, 2024) in conjunction with National Law Enforcement Memorial Week.
During the wreath laying ceremony at the Law Enforcement Memorial at Capitol Lake, Highway Patrol Col. Casey Collins said officers face some of the most perilous situations in our communities.
Those remembered on the memorial represent local, county, tribal, state and federal law enforcement agencies. This year, Moody County Chief Deputy Sheriff Ken Prorok’s name was added to the memorial. Prorock– whose family attended the memorial– was killed in the line of duty Feb. 2, 2024, during a vehicle pursuit. Joseph Gene Hoek of Sioux Falls has been charged with First Degree Murder and Aggravated Eluding in connection with Prorock’s death. South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley has filed notice of the state’s intention to ask for the death penalty in the case against Hoek.
A memorial service was also held.

The annual South Dakota Law Enforcement Memorial Service will be held in Pierre this morning (May 8, 2024) in conjunction with National Law Enforcement Memorial Week.
The wreath laying ceremony begins at 9:30am at the Law Enforcement Memorial at Capitol Lake. The gathering pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of the duty. After this ceremony is complete, a memorial service will be held at 10am at Lutheran Memorial Church (320 E. Prospect Ave.).

National Correctional Officers Week is being observed this week (May 5-11, 2024). National Police Officers Week is observed next week (May 12-18, 2024).
In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which the date falls as Police Week. In keeping with this tradition, the South Dakota Fraternal Order of Police, in conjunction with state, local and federal law enforcement agencies, has held this annual memorial service to honor South Dakota’s officers killed in the line of duty.
