Mike Rowe—the host of the “Dirty Jobs” television series on the Discovery Channel and the man who has done television commercials for Wrangler, Ford Motor Company and others—is in South Dakota today (Sept. 20) to help grow awareness for technical education.
South Dakota Department of Labor and Regulation Secretary Marcia Hultman says employers in the United States, especially the Midwest, are currently experiencing a critical shortage of workers in fields like construction, automotive, welding and nursing.
Rowe’s stop in South Dakota is connected to the Build Dakota scholarship program.
Hultman says these days, there are many different paths to career success.
Rowe will be making stops in Brandon and Watertown this morning, and Sioux Falls this afternoon.
Unfortunately, you won’t see or hear much about Mike Rowe’s visit as he’s instructed local media there are to be no photos or videos taken and comments he makes during his stops cannot be recorded. Joining Rowe will be Gov. Dennis Daugaard and Dana Dykhouse–CEO of First Premier Bank and Premier Bankcard, the company sponsoring Rowe’s visit.
Build Dakota is open to both in-state and out-of-state students. Applications for the 2017-2018 school year came from as far away as New Jersey and Alaska.
