The “Warrior of the Month” award was created as a way to recognize students involved in athletics, fine arts and other extracurricular activities at T.F. Riggs High School in Pierre. This award is presented to students in partnership with the South Dakota National Guard. All individuals nominated are then voted on by the Pierre School District Staff by taking into consideration students’ character, citizenship and grades. Congratulations to Jade Evans for being chosen as November’s “Warrior of the Month”. Here is her nomination:
Jade Evans (Gov-to-Gov): “Strong People Stand Up for Themselves, but Stronger People Stand Up For Others”. When I see this quote, I think about Jade. You may not think of the word “warrior” when you take a look at Jade. She is about as meek and tiny as they come, but her contributions to T.F. Riggs pack a powerful punch. Jade is a good student, involved in several school activities including competitive cheer and dance, National Honor Society, and Gov to Gov. She is always willing to volunteer for community service projects and school events. She is one of my best tutors and has taken a major part in starting a teen science café through the STEM program at the SD Discovery Center. She is always willing to help others out and she does ALL of these things without bringing any attention to herself. Our school definitely is a better place because Jade Evans quietly walks our halls. (Submitted by Mrs. Teri Johnson)
T.F. Riggs staff would also like to congratulate the other November nominee for his hard work and commitment.
Garrett Stout (Football): Garrett had an incredible season on the football field for the Govs. Coming into his first year as the QB he quickly matured into a great leader and has been an absolute warrior on the field, playing almost every play of every game as he plays offense, defense, and almost every special team. On the year he threw for over 1700 yards and rushed for over 1200 yards on the season accounting for over 30 TDs and being named 1st Team All-State, All-ESD, and 11AA Player of the Year. He is also selfless on the field, not caring about statistics and often giving the ball or credit to the rest of the team rather than seeking it himself. He played banged up, and often sacrificed his body in service to the team. Throughout the course of the season, there is no one I can think of who embodies the term warrior than Garrett, and much of our special season can be attributed to his leadership and work ethic.
