A barn and the chicks in it were lost in a structure fire on Verendrye Drive in Fort Pierre yesterday (Mon.) afternoon.
Fort Pierre Volunteer Fire Department assistant chief Tye Odden says nearby structures were saved.
Odden says fires up on Verendrye Drive are extra work because there isn’t a strong water source up there.
He says a few firefighters were checked out by paramedics on scene.
Odden says there was only one driveway to get to the location so responders had to continuously move equipment around to maintain the water supply needed to fight the blaze. He says they were on scene for about 3.5 hours.
Also assisting the Fort Pierre Volunteer Fire Department were the Pierre Rural Volunteer Fire Department, Pierre Rescue, Stanley County Sheriff’s Office, AMR Ambulance and the Stanley County Highway Department.
