The South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Department is holding two public meetings regarding the recent discovery of zebra mussels in Lake Sharpe.
The meetings are Wednesday, Sept. 18 at the Arrowwood Resort in Oacoma and Thursday, Sept. 19 at the Pierre Ramkota. Both meetings will be from 7-9 p.m.
These meetings will provide residents with information on reducing the risk of spreading aquatic invasive species like zebra mussels and examples of how others have mitigated impacts of mussels on water infrastructure.
The most direct impact of zebra mussels is on surface water infrastructure of municipalities, irrigators, hydropower producers, industrial users, and rural water systems. Mussels frequently clog pumps and pipes, severely restricting water flow. The cost of mitigating impacts of mussels can be in the millions of dollars annually for some surface water users.
