Five hospitals in the Avera Health System– including the one in Pierre– were named 5-Star facilities by the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
The five South Dakota sites earning the highest rating include:
- Avera St. Mary’s Hospital, Pierre
- Avera St. Luke’s Hospital, Aberdeen
- Avera Queen of Peace Hospital, Mitchell
- Avera Heart Hospital, Sioux Falls
- Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton

The Hospital Compare rating system summarizes a variety of quality measures into a single star rating making it easier for consumers to compare hospitals.
Last month, CMS updated data on Hospital Compare with over 4,500 hospitals being part of the update. The five top performing Avera sites consistently exceeded national and state scores. Less than 9% of hospitals across the country achieve a five star rating.
