WATERTOWN, S.D. – USA Softball South Dakota will continue to monitor the COVID19 and its affect on the 2020 USA Softball season. State Commissioner Gary Young says that the softball association will be in discussions with deputy and area commissioners, umpires, and some league officers around the state the remainder of this week and beyond. Young says he remains in contact with USA Softball, as well as contact and monitoring with the Governor & SD Department of Health office and web sites and will discuss with the local municipalities and ask them to notify the association on changes they make to availability of facilities for practice and meetings, as well as field usage for leagues and tournaments. Young says it is still early and they will not suggest a start date until more is known. In most cases, it will be the league and their teams decision unless directed by local authority. He adds that most of the leagues are having meetings and sign-ups and encourages leagues to register thier team, players, and umpires. While South Dakota has not made an official decision yet, Young says North Dakota has suggested a delayed start to the season until early May. Other states are considering a mid April to a mid May start.
