BROOKINGS – After not being selected in this year’s Major League Baseball draft, which was cut to five rounds due to the pandemic, South Dakota State shortstop Gus Steiger signed Saturday with the Cincinnati Reds as an undrafted rookie free agent. When Steiger may play in the Reds’ organization is unclear. No official decision has been made on whether any affiliated minor league baseball will be played this season.
Steiger, a junior from Minnetonka, Minnesota, hit .321 this season in 14 games before COVID-19 ended the Jackrabbits’ season. He was an All-Summit league player as a sophomore and second team as a freshman. In 112 career games at SDSU, Steiger hit .319 with 26 doubles, four triples, seven home runs and 76 RBI.
