PIERRE – This week, the South Dakota High School Activities Association board will vote on the plan for fall sports and activities put forth by a task force set to determine the safety of conducting events.
The proposal includes these points:
- It is recommended that schools keep a seating chart on busses to help with contact tracing and that passengers wear masks while on the bus.
- There will be rule modifications for sports, fine arts and activities.
- The SDHSAA will work with the state Department of Health and Department of Education as part of a “school response team.” This will be in place to deal with a school that may have confirmed COVID-19 cases.
- In case of a rash of positive cases that would stop a school from taking part in an event, the SDHSAA would work to reschedule the contest. If that could not be done, it would be considered “no contest” and not have an impact on postseason standing. However, if a team didn’t play a game by choice, then that would likely be a forfeit.
- Schools will determine whether athletes who voluntarily take classes online would still be able to participate in sports.
The task force also recommended that fall sports and activities in South Dakota should begin on time.
The SDHSAA Board of Governors is set to vote on the proposals in a special meeting Wednesday (July 22) at 10:00 AM CT.
