Tuesday (July 21, 2020) during the US House Agriculture Committee’s Nutrition, Oversight and Department Operations Subcommittee hearing, Subcommittee Ranking Member Dusty Johnson (SD-AL) questioned U.S. Department of Agriculture Undersecretary Ibach on the ongoing investigation into the cattle markets following the Holcomb, Kansas fire in 2019.
During Johnson’s questioning on the status of the investigation, Undersecretary Ibach told Johnson USDA was “nearing conclusion” and looks forward to “releasing a report from USDA in the very near future.” Ibach also stated “there may be action that the committee may want to consider as a result of the report.”
“Our producers have waited over a year for answers from USDA’s investigation into the volatile cattle markets,” said Johnson. “It’s something I’m eager to see and will continue to push for.”
In 2019, Johnson urged USDA to provide a thorough investigation to producers following cattle market volatility after the August 2019 Holcomb, Kansas Tyson beef processing plant. After continued instability caused by the COVID-19 outbreak, Johnson urged President Trump to conduct a multi-agency investigation into the cattle markets.
