On Friday, the NAIA announced that its football championships have been postponed until the spring of 2021. Earlier in the week, it was announced that all other fall sports championships (volleyball, cross country, soccer) would be postponed.
Both of the NAIA conferences that contain South Dakota schools say that they intend to play the regular season this fall as scheduled. The Great Plains Athletic Conference, which includes Dakota Wesleyan, made a statement on July 21 stating that it intends to move forward with fall sports. The North Star Athletic Association, whose South Dakota members are Presentation College and Dakota State, made a similar statement on Thursday. In both cases, practices can begin August 15. Competition in football can begin September 12, with competition in other fall sports allowed exactly one week earlier.
