Last of the inmates who walked away from the women’s prison in Pierre in March is back in custody

A South Dakota Women’s Prison inmate who walked away from a minimum-security unit in Pierre five months ago is back in custody.

Philomene Bone Shirt was arrested yesterday (Aug. 18) in Sioux Falls. She is currently housed at the Minnehaha County Jail.

Bone Shirt was among a group of nine inmates that left the Pierre Community Work Center without authorization March 23, 2020. The group walked out soon after it was announced an inmate in their unit at the prison had tested positive for COVID-19. Bone Shirt is the last of the group to be brought back into custody.

Leaving a non-secure correctional facility without authorization constitutes second-degree escape, a Class 5 felony punishable by a maximum of 5 years in prison.

Boneshirt was serving a 7-month, 15-day sentence for third-degree simple assault and a consecutive 1-year sentence for possession of a controlled substance. Both convictions are from Minnehaha County.
