The South Dakota Department of Human Services is looking to add regional crisis diversion centers in the Sioux Falls and Rapid City areas.
Secretary Shawnie Rechtenbaugh says adding the two locations would allow the department to offer regional access to their most intensive level of care, which historically has only been available at their facility in Redfield. She says the additional diversion centers would provide an opportunity to serve people closer to home.
Earlier this year, a consultant assessed the services the state provides individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) and recommended establishing the additional regional crisis diversion centers. The South Dakota Developmental Center in Redfield would to continue to serve the central region of the state with an emphasis on transitional living to assist individuals with becoming more independent and moving to a less restrictive environment.
The new regional crisis diversion centers will be certified as intermediate care facilities by the South Dakota Department of Health.
