PIERRE – At the Hollister Field 2020 football home opener, the Pierre Governors received the battle that they expected, but held off West Central 24-14 to improve to 2-0.
Maguire Raske again excelled rushing, with 171 yards on 28 carries and three touchdowns, giving him 300 yards and seven touchdowns in the season’s first two games. Raske now has 38 rushing touchdowns in his career. Carston Miller also hit a 28-yard field goal for Pierre.
Raske and Regan Bollweg recorded sacks, while Josh Rowse led Governor tacklers with 13. Gunnar Gehring had nine. Preston Taylor recovered a fumble.
Governor head coach Steve Steele said that West Central came in determined.
Steele praised the Trojans’ defense.
Steele said that Pierre’s offensive line improved as the game continued.
Steele said that the Governor defense was concerned, but not overly so, about West Central’s offense, normally running the option, breaking out occasional big pass play
According to Steele, West Central made the Governors’ passing game difficult to execute.
Steele said that tight games like this one aren’t really a bad thing.
