WINNER – Winner Warriors’ athletic director, head football coach and middle school principal Dan Aaker resigned suddenly on Wednesday. Keven Morehart, the Winner superintendent, said that a special meeting of the Winner school board was held Wednesday evening to accept Aaker’s resignation. Morehart did not say why Aaker resigned.
Aaker was in his 19th season as Warriors’ head coach and had a record of 163-39. He led Winner to 11B state championships in 2009, 2012, 2015 and 2016 and to the title game last season, where Winner lost to Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan. This season, the Warriors are 3-0 and atop both the coaches and media polls.
Trent Olson replaces Aaker as Winner’s head football coach on an interim basis. Brett Gardner has been named the interim activities director and middle school principal.
Also, Aaker is no longer eligible to serve as the West River at-large representative on the South Dakota High School Activities Association board. The position will remain vacant until an election next spring.
