Today (Thursday, September 10) is World Suicide Prevention Day. Also, September is Suicide Prevention Month and Recovery Month in South Dakota. The State Department of Social Services is leading the effort to help residents away from thoughts that could lead to suicide.
DSS Cabinet Secretary Laurie Gill referred to a program aimed at suicide prevention.
Gill said that there is a concerted effort to inform school-age students about available resources.
Gill said that the Be-the-1-SD program encourages youths to talk out their problems before they reach a desperate stage.
Gill pointed out that since the pandemic began, more people have reached out for help.
Those feeling overwhelming sadness, depression or anxiety are encouraged to check out the website bethe1sd.com, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255) or use the Crisis Text Line by texting “Hello” to 741741.
