YANKTON – Corbin Sohler rushed for 105 yards and three touchdowns and caught a touchdown pass Friday as the Yankton Bucks ended the Pierre Governors’ 18-game winning streak with a 52-29 win at Crane-Youngworth Field.
Yankton (3-0) broke a 29-29 halftime tie in the middle of third quarter on an 11-yard touchdown run by Sohler. Sohler had a 62-yard touchdown run later in the third quarter, then Cody Oswald ran back an interception for a score before the end of a third quarter where the Governors were outscored 20-0.
Lincoln Kienholz threw for 365 yards and two touchdowns for Pierre (2-1), but was also intercepted four times. Zach Letellier had an 80-yard touchdown reception and caught six passes for 229 yards. Regan Bollweg also had a touchdown catch. Maguire Raske had a third straight 100-yard rushing game to begin the season, carrying for 116 yards on 21 carries and two touchdowns, extending his career total to 40.
Defensively, Gunnar Gehring led the Governors with 15 tackles. Bollweg had a sack. Cord Ellis had an interception.
Head Coach Steve Steele was asked what it was like for his team to lose for the first time since the 2018 season.
Steele said that the Governors made too many mistakes.
Steele hopes that any pressing Pierre may have done is over.
Steele pointed out that there is plenty of good competition, including the Governors, among the best teams in 11AA.
Steele is sure that Tea Area will provide Pierre with another great test.
