Governor Kristi Noem has proclaimed Sept. 20-26 Adult Education and Family Literacy Week in South Dakota.
The goal of this week is to increase public awareness of how adult education and family literacy supports jobs and higher wages, benefits the economy and business productivity, and helps our residents reach their full potential to achieve stable employment.
“Through a network of partnerships, we have served more than 2,335 students in adult education programs since July 2019,” said state Labor and Regulation Secretary Marcia Hultman. “This included 168 who received their GED® credential and more than 560 who studied English as a Second Language.”
In South Dakota, more than 15% of adults experience literacy issues and 24% of adults experience numeracy issues.
“Such deficiencies may greatly impact their lives and the lives of their families,” said Secretary Hultman. “Our programs emphasize these skills, along with writing, English language competency, problem-solving, digital literacy and family literacy. These efforts lead to an educated workforce and higher quality of life.”
The Adult Education and Family Literacy Program, under Title II of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act, supports these services and activities. Read success stories to learn how employers and individuals have found workplace success.
