Today’s (Oct. 8) update from the South Dakota Department of Health showed 536 new cases of COVID-19 in the state since yesterday.
Hughes County currently has 134 active cases of COVID-19, 56 of them are connected to the State Women’s Prison in Pierre.
State Women’s Prison Units A, B, C and D as of 9:30am today:
- 9 staff, 6 recovered
- 73 inmates, 69 recovered
Unit E (separate building located behind the Women’s Prison):
- 0 staff
- 52 inmates, 0 recovered
Pierre Community Work Center (located east of the main prison and the National Guard Armory):
- 7 staff, 5 recovered
- 113 inmates, 113 recovered
Coronavirus patients currently occupy 12% of the staffed hospital beds in the state. Other patients are using 50% of the staffed beds leaving 38% available. Of the staffed intensive care unit beds in the state, COVID-19 patients are using 19%, other patients occupy 56% and 25% are available to be used.
