PIERRE – Changes have been approved for the 2020 South Dakota High School Football playoffs.
In a special meeting of the South Dakota High School Activities Association board of directors on Friday morning, a proposal to consider changes to how 11AAA teams will be seeded was finalized. Only three teams have played all of their scheduled games, so there will be more consideration given to head-to-head matchups. There is the possibility that a team seeded one spot below another that it defeated would be moved ahead of that teaam.
An alternate team will be identified in 11AAA, 11A, 11B and the 9-man classes, to be available if a team is unable to participate in the first round of the playoffs. This will be the 9th-place team in 11AAA and 11A and the 17th-place team in the other classifications.
A consideration of allowing non-playoff teams to schedule an additional game on Thursday, Friday or Saturday of next week was proposed, but not seconded, so the matter died before it came to a vote.
These changes will only be in effect for this season.
