(KMIT)- A Mitchell woman who pleaded guilty to felony child abuse after a deadly house fire in April was sentenced on Tuesday. 26-year old Ayla Barna was sentenced to eight years in prison. Her six-year old daughter died in the house fire, which was started when the girl played with a cigarette lighter after Barna left the children unsupervised at night. Two of the children escaped the fire with the help of neighbors. Judge Chris Giles called the incident a tragedy that was preventable, adding that Barna was responsible for the care, custody, and control of the three children. Barna faced a maximum penalty of fifteen years in prison. In exchange for the guilty plea in September, other charges were dropped.
