Friday, Dec. 18, 2020, is now the deadline to apply for the South Dakota Department of Labor and Regulation’s UpSkill program for dislocated workers.
The program allows qualifying individuals to enroll– 100% online– in occupational skills training at little to no cost.
Certificate programs are being offered in the spring 2021 semester from Lake Area Technical College and Western Dakota Technical College. The 18-credit, online programs include marketing, human resources, programming, medical coding, community healthcare worker, phlebotomy and EMT/pre-paramedic.
Labor and Regulation Secretary Marcia Hultman says to be eligible, the worker must have lost their job due to a COVID-19 reason and be eligible for reemployment assistance, otherwise known as unemployment insurance. She says after completing an UpSkill program, the participant can enter a new career field, advance in their current field or continue their education. Credits from these certificates can also integrate with associate and bachelor’s degree programs at public institutions across the state.
