At Tuesday’s meeting of the Walworth County Commission, incoming Commissioner and former Sheriff Duane Mohr used the public forum time to acknowledge Sheriff Josh Boll’s recent swearing in by Chief Justice Gilbertson as the new President of the South Dakota Sheriff’s Association.
The commissioners voted 3 to 2 to revise the county employee handbook for travel compensation, which will now read “Travel expenses and per diem rates will only be reimbursed when it requires an overnight stay.” Commissioner Jim Houck, who voted against the motion, said this revision is directed at the Sheriff’s transport officers.
Commissioner Kevin Holgard then questioned Sheriff Josh Boll on an emergency one-day hiring decision that Boll had to make because he needed a female inmate transported, and he is dealing with individuals being gone for National Guard duty and another is out currently with Covid. Holgard said those things need to be considered when hiring individuals. Here is the exchange between Houck and Holgard regarding the hiring of National Guard members.
Sheriff Boll explained why he had to make that phone call for transport assistance.
For the highway department the commission approved a utility easement for Darren Beitelspacher of Beitelspacher Farms, and Highway Superintendent Gary Byre informed the board that the culvert project is moving forward on 300th Avenue.
Motions were approved on prisoner boarding contracts for Hughes and Faulk counties.
The recycle center in Mobridge is closing. The doors will be locked and the bins and equipment will be moved out to the landfill for now.
Discussion began on 911 mapping for the rural areas. The commission will talk about it more at an upcoming meeting.
