It’ll likely be next week (Dec. 21-25, 2020) before the COVID-19 vaccine is available to designated Phase 1 workers at the Avera facilities in Pierre.
Dr. Mikel Holland is the President and Chief Medical Officer at Avera St. Mary’s Hospital in Pierre. He says at the direction of the South Dakota Department of Health, Avera’s first shipment of the COVID-19 vaccine will be distributed in Sioux Falls only. Holland anticipates Avera St. Mary’s Hospital, as well as Avera Missouri River Health Center in Gettysburg, will receive vaccine with the next shipment, which may arrive next week (Dec. 21-25, 2020). He says they have a local team working on the logistics of who, when and where they’ll be vaccinating when it arrives.
All three major healthcare networks in South Dakota– Avera, Monument and Sanford– as well as the Mobridge Regional Hospital and the Prairie Lakes Healthcare System in Watertown received their first batch of the FDA authorized Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine yesterday (Dec. 15, 2020).
South Dakota’s initial allotment of COVID-19 vaccines from the federal government included 7,800 Pfizer doses and 14,600 Moderna doses. The Moderna vaccine is expected to arrive in the state next week and be distributed within the healthcare systems according to South Dakota’s vaccination plan.
