PIERRE – Aleise Christopherson of basketball and wrestling’s Deegan Houska are the Pierre Athletic Coaches Association-Avera Athletes of the Week for the week ending January 30.
Christopherson scored 19 points for the Pierre sophomores in a win over the Yankton JV.
Head coach Kirk Beebout said of Christopherson: “Aleise is a dominant player in both the freshman and sophomore games. She is an example of someone who consistently ‘does the little things.’ Aleise sets herself apart with her fundamental skills, defensive play, and court sense. She is a presence on the court and a model of work ethic and hustle. Aleise is a coach’s dream; she can be counted on to play any offensive position at any moment and can turn around and guard the opponent’s best player for an entire game. Aleise is a role model on and off the court and is simply invaluable to the success of the Governor basketball program.”
Houska won a tournament for the first time this season at the Les Tluostos Invitational in Brookings, pinning all three opponents to win the 152-pound class. In the championship match, Houska was trailing Milbank’s Barrett Schenck 3-0 with around 15 seconds left before coming back for the pin as the time expired.
Head Coach Shawn Lewis said of Houska: “Deegan is now wrestling the best he has all year and it is coming at the perfect time.”
