The rolling blackouts have stopped in South Dakota– for now– but electric companies are asking customers to continue conserving power for another day or so.
Missouri River Energy Services vice president of communications and member services Joni Livingston says about half of their 61 members are part of the Southwest Power Pool. She says only those members were affected by the rolling blackouts.
Livingston says they asked Fort Pierre to run its generation station to help add more power to the grid.
MRES provides 40% of Pierre Municipal Utilities’ power supply. The other 60% comes from the Western Area Power Administration, which is generated from hydroelectric dams along the Missouri River.
Livingston says the SPP called upon both companies– and many others– to initiate measures to lighten the load on the power grid, thus the rolling blackouts.
Livingston says people can do simple things to help conserve power.
