BROOKINGS – South Dakota State sophomore guard Noah Friedel announced Wednesday that he will sit out the remainder of the season.
Friedel revealed that he is afflicted with depression. He did not play last Sunday in the Jackrabbits’ last game, a win at Oral Roberts, a move called as a “mutual decision” by head coach Eric Robertson.
In a statement, Friedel said, “After meeting with Coach Hendo and my family, we’ve decided I’m not going to play for the remainder of the year as I’ve been struggling with depression and anxiety. I’m going to take this time to get healthy and work through these mental health issues. I’m so thankful to be surrounded by amazing teammates and I can’t wait to get back out on the floor with them.”
Friedel is the Jackrabbits’ leading scorer at 17.1 points per game and a 40 percent three-point shooter. Last season, Friedel was the Summit League Freshman of the Year, averaging just over 12 points per game.
